16. Jesus Christ will return to judge the living and the dead.



  Introduction

    When we pray the Apostles’ Creed, we say about Jesus:

    "“I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.”".

    After studying the great mysteries of Incarnation and Redemption, we are going to put our attention in an article which announces the second coming of Christ, because “From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.”

    When Jesus Christ comes, He will arrived “in His glory, escorted by all the angels, then He will take his seat on his throne of glory. All nations will be assembled before him and He will separate people one from another as the shepherd separates sheeps from goats. He will place the sheeps on his right hand and the goats on his left... And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.' (Matthew 25, 31.32. 46).

  Main ideas

1. Particular judgement and Last judgement

    In addition of the particular judgement, which happens inmediately after our death, the Church’s faith tells us that, at the end of times, the whole human race will be judged. That second judgement will be to everybody and in presence of the humanity, at the end of times. This is why it is called final or universal judgement.

2. Sense of the last judgement

    The last judgement won’t change the sentence dictated in the particular judgement, but it will be necessary to make shine God’s wisdom and divine justice, to reward the uprights and punish the wicked, also in a physical way. In the presence of Christ, who embodies the Truth, the relation between each man and God will lay bare. The last judgement will reveal to its final consequences what each one has done- right or wrong- or hasn’t done during his earthly life.

3. Jesus’ second coming

    The Final Judgement will happen when Jesus Christ returned as glorious Christ. As the Apostles foretold, the Lord Jesus Christ will come with great power and majesty, surrounded by his angels, as Supreme Judge. Only God knows the day and the hour of that event, and only Him decides his coming. Then, God Father will say, by means of his son Jesus Christ, his ultimate word about the whole history. We will know then the ultimate meaning of the work of Creation and Redemption, and finally understand the amazing paths the Providence of God will have been driving everything to its last meaning.

    The last judgement will reveal that justice of God is stronger than all the injustices commited by his creatures and His live is stronger than death.

4. Hope of “new heaven and new Earth”.

    At the end of times, the Kingdom of God reached to its peak, and the righteous shall reign forever at the side of Christ, glorified in body and soul. And the universe itself- the whole universe- will be changed. The Holy Scriptures give to this misterious renovation the name ‘new heaven and new earth’, and it will transform humanity and the world.

    We don’t know how it will be, but it is called New Jerusalem by St. John, and God will live among men. ‘He will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness or pain. The world of the past has gone.’ (Revelations 21,4).

5. Preparing ourselves to the definitive encounter with God

    When the II Vatican Council pronounces about these great truths, it specifies that the wait for a new land “far from diminishing our concern to develop this earth the expectancy of a new earth should spur us.” And that ‘When we have spread on earth the fruits of our nature and our enterprise . . . according to the command of the Lord and in his Spirit, we will find them once again, cleaned this time from the stain of sin, illuminated and transfigured, when Christ presents to his Father an eternal and universal kingdom. God will then be ‘all in all’ in eternal life.” (cfr. Lumen gentium, 48).
