God is holy and so is his name, because the name represents the person. This explains why we feel indignation if someone irreverently says the name of a loved one. This is the reason why when we name God, we do not think of the letters that make up that word, but instead, we think of God himself. This is why we have to sanctify his name and pronounce it with great respect.

Angels and saints in heaven continually praise the name of God, proclaiming him a holy saint. In the Our Father prayer, we praise: “Hallowed be thy name”, and we must strive that the name of God may be glorified on Earth.

We honor or sanctify God’s name when we praise Him as Creator and Savior, confessing to humanity that He is our God and Lord. We do this by listening with devotion or meditating the word of God, by giving thanks for all that is given to us or by asking Him for help with confidence and protection; by taking care of all that is holy; by seeking that God be known, loved and honored by all; by swearing with piety, justice and truth, and by making vows or pleasant promises to God with the intent to comply.

In respect to God’s name, that one way or another is always adored; we have to respect the places, objects and persons that are consecrated to Him. Temples and cemeteries are sacred places, which require a behavior full of respect and dignity. The altar, the chalice and other objects dedicated to the cult are also sacred objects. The ministers of God and religious people are also consecrated people; therefore, the Pope and the bishops deserve respect due to what they represent, and that is why people should not speak badly of them.

The sin of sacrilege is committed when things or sacred places are made profane or when people consecrated to God are insulted.

Sometimes, it is necessary to reinforce a declaration of what someone saw or heard with a special testimony. On very important occasions, especially in courts, you can invoke God to witness the truth of what is said or promised: this is what it means to make an oath. Apart from these cases you should never swear, and we must ensure that the human coexistence is established based on truth and honesty. Jesus said, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” (Matthew 5:37).

A vow is a deliberate and free promise made to God about a possible and better good, with the intention to be bound and comply. The custom must be of making resolutions that are going to help us improve without the need of vows and promises, unless we were asked to do so by God himself. It is wise to ask the confessor before making a promise to God, in order to make sure that we can actually fulfill it.

In addition to the sins of perjury or the non-compliance of a vow, sins against this commandment are: to pronounce the name of God lightly or without reason, and to call upon, curse or blaspheme God angrily. Blasphemy is to say insulting words or make gestures against God, the Virgin, the saints and the Church. If done consciously, it is a grave sin, because it goes directly against God.

In baptism, the newborn is given a name; the parents, the godparents and the priest should endeavor for the name to be a Christian name, for example, the name of a saint who lived a life of exemplary fidelity to God. By being placed under the patronage of a saint, the Christian is being offered a model of Christian charity and is assured intercession. This is why the name of every person is sacred and deserves respect. God knows each of us by name.
