13. Jesus' public life

  Introduction

Christians "have to meditate on the life of Christ, from his birth in a manger to his death and resurrection (...). It is necessary to know it well. Thus, we must have the life of Christ “in our heart and mind, so that at any time, without any book, we can close our eyes and contemplate his life, watching it like a film (...). “In this way we become involved in his life. It is not a matter of just thinking about Jesus, of recalling some scenes of his life. "We must be completely involved and play a part in his life (actors). We must follow him as closely as Mary his Mother did, the first twelve, the holy women and the crowds that pressed about him. If we do this without holding back, Christ’s words will enter deep into our soul and will really change us." (St. Josemaria Escrivá, “Christ Is passing By”, 107).

  Main Ideas

1. The Mysteries of Jesus' public life

In the three years of Jesus' public life, we can emphasize the baptism in the Jordan, the temptations in the desert, the preaching about the Kingdom of God, the transfiguration on Mount Tabor, the ascent to Jerusalem, The messianic entry into the Holy City and the final mysteries of the Passion and death to redeem mankind.

2. The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan

With the baptism begins the Lord's public life. The Precursor resists baptizing him, but Jesus insists and John the Baptist did it. It was the time of the manifestation of Jesus before Israel as the promised Messiah of the Old Testament and as the Son of God. The Baptism of Jesus reminds us the ours.

3. Jesus' temptations in the desert

After the baptism, Jesus got away from the desert to pray and was tempted by the devil. The answers to the tempter show the filial identification with the plan of salvation willed by God, his Father. The Church celebrates each year the quarantine of Jesus who beat the devil's temptations.

4. The preaching about the kingdom of God

Jesus came to the world to preach the kingdom of God and to found the Church. The most significant preachings are: the Sermon on the Mount and the parables, confirming his mission with the sanctity and miracles. From the beginning of his public life, Jesus chose twelve disciples to walk with him.

  B. Indicate if these facts refer to the baptism of Jesus, to the temptations in the desert

He explained the Sermon on the Mount

John the Baptist did it in the Jordan River

Jesus got away from the desert to pray

It is the manifestation of Jesus to Israel

 He taught the parables

 Jesus defeated the devil

5. The Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor

Jesus was transfigured before his favorite disciples (Peter, James and John) to strengthen their faith. According to the tradition, it happened on Mount Tabor.

6. The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem

Jesus goes up to Jerusalem willing to die. He knew that there was going to be consummated (by the sacrifice in the cross) the salvation of mankind. The messianic entry into Jerusalem (celebrated on Palm Sunday) manifest the coming of the kingdom that the Messiah (received by children and humble of heart people) will perform with his death and resurrection.

7. From the Cenacle to the Cross

"Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end" (John 13,1). Thus, John introduces the story of the last events in the life of the Lord before he suffers. Actually, these moments reveal how much he suffered and how much he loved us. He sent two disciples to prepare the easter, and Jesus with the disciples gathered in a meeting room historically called as the Cenacle.

Then, he gave a long speech, which serve as a setting to the washing of the feet (an example of humility and service), to the new commandment of love, to the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood ("Do this in remembrance of me" (John 22:19)), to the promise of the Holy Spirit, to the priestly prayer that open the expectation of the glory of the Cross, where the glory of the Father is restored and the doors of heaven are opened to men.

Considering these events (like Judas' betrayal and Peter's denials), God the Father glorified his Son in the resurrection and ascension into heaven, where is seated at the right hand of God.

8. Knowing the life of Jesus

Christians must know the life of Jesus Christ. It will help reading and meditating on the Scriptures, from which they will learn lessons that set the path of holiness in ordinary family life.
