Christmas lights |
There is still over one month to go before Christmas and at department stores there are already decorations reminding us of how happy we are spending money. And, leaving the crisis behind for a while, we will buy all kinds of gifts for family and friends, thinking that we will make them happier that way. And without questioning their educational value, we will purchase electronic gadgets and videogames for the little ones, even though they are very expensive and we overlook that they encourage violence. What matters is that they are state-of-the-art so that our children are no different than their friends. And with all the hustle and bustle involved, besides the pomp with which commercial establishments induce such consumption, we are likely to forget, not only about the crisis, but also about corruption, about Somali pirates, about world hunger, about pateras and cayucos, (Boats used by African illegal immigrants to reach European shores) and even about climate change. But will we be really happier?

Luces de Navidad

Falta más de un mes para la Navidad y en los grandes almacenes ya empiezan a aparecer los adornos que nos recuerdan lo dichosos que somos consumiendo. Y olvidándonos de la crisis, compraremos todo tipo de regalos para familiares y amigos, pensando que así les haremos más felices. Y sin cuestionarnos su valor educativo compraremos artilugios electrónicos y videojuegos a los pequeños, aunque sean muy caros y desconozcamos que incitan a la violencia. Lo importante es que sean de la última generación para que nuestros hijos no sean diferentes de sus amigos. Y con el ajetreo que todo ello conlleva, y con la parafernalia con que incitan ese consumo las superficies comerciales, conseguirán que nos olvidemos, no sólo de la crisis, sino también de la corrupción, de los piratas somalíes, del hambre en el mundo, de las pateras y cayucos y hasta del cambio climático. Pero, ¿de verdad seremos más felices?
