1. The Anointing of the sick
It is a sacrament instituted by our lord Jesus Christ for the physical and spiritual relief of the sick. It prepares for death.
- The material is the olive oil blessed by a bishop on Maundy Thursday. It is called the “holy oils”. A priest makes anointing with the sign of the cross over the forehead and hands of the sick.
- The shape is the prayer pronounced by the priest: "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” It is answered: "Amén".
- The minister of the Anointing is the parish, but in case of necessity, any priest could administer this sacrament.
- The subject is the Christian who reached the age of reason and is in danger of death or under a serious sickness or old age. It is not necessary a danger of death, because a serious sickness could also need the Anointing. Those who received it must be in state of grace. For these, the sick must confess before receive it. If he couldn't confess by any circumstances, only an act of contrition would be needed. It is also necessary to have the intention of receive the sacrament and accept the will of God.
