31. The Eucharist



  1. The Eucharist as a sacrament

    The Eucharist is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ under the species of bread and wine.

   There are three main points in Eucharist:

   a) In the Eucharist are the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, and not an image or representation of them. This is called the dogma of real presence.

   b) In the Eucharist, during the Mass, Jesus offered himself for all of us.

   c) In the Eucharist we received Jesus Christ on the Holy Communion. It is a sacrament.

   Related to the sacrament, we can distinguish between matter, shape, minister and subject.

   - The matter is the weath bread and the wine. This means that Jesus is our food in the same way as bread and wine are the food of our body. Eucharist is the food for soul.

   - The shape consists in the words of consecration. “This is my body...This is my blood...” These words has a divine value, because Jesus Christ pronounced them through the mouth of the priest.

   - The minister could be the bishop or the priest. Only them, in the figure of the Apostles, received the ability of consecrate. Jesus said to them: “Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke, 22,19).

   - The subject is everyone who could receive Communion in full right.

  2. The Communion

   The Holy Communion is to receive Jesus Christ under the species of bread and wine.

   It is food for our souls, it increases our grace and it is also a promise of eternal life.

   We must receive communion because Jesus said: “...unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6,64). We make our First Communion when we reached the age of reason. We must receive Communion at least once a year, during Easter (third commandment of the Law of the Church) and in danger of death.

   To receive Communion in a proper way three things are needed: to be in grace of God (without mortal sins), keep the days of fast and know what are we doing.

   The fast consists on not eat or drink nothing since an hour before take communion. Water does not nullify fast.

   We must approach to Communion with faith, fervour, humility and modesty.

   Those who take communion in mortal sin commit a horrible sacrilege.
