48. The fourth commandment: You shall honor your father and your mother. |
Introduction
After studying the first commandments, which include the duties towards God, we will consider the remaining seven that tell about the neighbor and it can be summarized as “"You shall love your neighbor as yourself”.
We start with the fourth, it says: “You shall honor your father and your mother”. God wants us–after him- to honor parents, who have given us life and transmitted us the knowledge of God; but the commandment also includes the relationship with other members of the family group, such as the grandparents and ancestors to whom we also have the duty to honor them, to give our affection and recognition. Finally, it extends to the duties of the student with his teacher, the employee with his employer, the subordinate with his boss, the citizen with his homeland, those who administer or govern.
