Whether we want it or not, Death inevitably comes to every man because it is the natural end of the existence. Normally, it is because of serious illness or old age.

To face with dignity and welfare that time of life, God helps the Christian with the Anointing of the sick. A powerful aid to endure the disease and to go to meet the death strengthened by the special grace of the sacrament. Although some faithful resist and do not want to brave death, the Christian prudence establishes that we must estimate and wish this sacrament as a gift of God's mercy. It would be nice to ask every day for properly receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

Jesus has a salutary remedy for any need of supernatural life, and in the last moments of life, the devil rides the big battle, needing the soul of special aids. Jesus Christ has linked these aids to the Anointing of the Sick, a sacrament instituted for spiritual and corporal comfort of the seriously ill Christian. Through this sacrament, the Christian joins Jesus to experience the same feelings that he had before the pain and death.

Although it was promulgated by the apostle James, this sacrament was instituted by Christ which shows the tradition of the Church when he says: "Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him"(James 5,14-15).

The administration of this sacrament has various ceremonies. The essence of the celebration is the application of the matter (holy oils) and the form (words pronounced by the minister while anointing the sick). The priest anoints with blessed oil (oil consecrated by the bishop on Holy Thursday, hence the name "holy oils") the forehead and hands of the sick, as he says: "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit." The answer is: "Amen." He adds: "To free from your sins, it gives salvation and comfort in your illness." The answer: "Amen." In case of necessity, the priest who administers the anointing can bless the oil then.

God comes to our aid at all times, as Father who loves us and wants us to be happy on earth and then in heaven. When we have studied this sacrament, we should think about the reality of death, recalling the need to always live in the grace of God, to grow in Christian life, to accept the suffering we have in this life and to accept the death with joy, knowing that it is definitely the necessary step to meet God in heaven.
