1. The Eucharistic sacrifice and the communion

   The Eucharistic sacrifice or holy Mass is the sacrifial memorial that perpetuates the sacrifice of the cross offered to the Father, and the sacred banquet of communion in the Body and Blood of Christ. The Eucharist is also directed to the intimate union of the faithful with Christ through the communion where Christ is received. Christ offers to the Father and gives himself to men.

2. Jesus introduced the Eucharist as food for our souls

   Jesus promised the Apostles in Capernaum that would give his flesh for the life of the world: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is drink: he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him "(John 6, 54 - 56).

    At the Last Supper, the promise was fulfilled and the Lord introduced the Eucharist: "Take and eat; this is my body" (Matthew 26, 26). It is the clear statement that the body of the Lord is in the Eucharist and is our food.

3.The fruits of communion

   The communion supports the spiritual life the same way as tangible food supports body life. In particular, we can note these fruits of communion:

    – Increase the union with Christ, truly present in the sacrament.

    – Increase the grace and virtues in people who receive communion worthily.

    – Separate us from the sin: purify of venial sins, of failures and negligence, because it arouses charity.

    – Strengthen the unity of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ.

    – Christ gives us the future glory in the Eucharist.

4. Aptitudes to receive communion

   They are:

    a) Being in God's grace that means, free of mortal sin. If mortal sins have not been confessed, no one can receive communion, despite the repentance. Venial sin does not impede the communion, but it is logical that we desire to receive Jesus with very a clean soul. Hence the Church advises to confess frequently, although we have no mortal sins. If someone came to receive communion in mortal sin, would commit a sacrilege.

    b) Save the Eucharistic fast: that implies not eat or drink one hour before receive communion; the water and medicines do not break the fast. The elderly, the sick and their nurses can receive commune despite the hour after drink has not passed.

    c) To know who is received: considering that Christ is received in the sacrament, we cannot come to receive Communion thoughtlessly or routinely. We have to do so to respond the desire of Jesus and to find in the communion a medicine for our weakness.

    Even in the external composure, we must manifest piety and respect with the Lord. To receive communion, we must kneel or stand up, as the hierarchy of the Church have determined it and ask the devotion of each of us.

5. Communion Thanksgiving

   Jesus has remained in the Eucharist for us. The best way to receive him is preparing well before receiving Communion. We must be aware of the gift received and we have to thank not only in the moment of communion but throughout the day. After communion, we must stay in the church or in the oratory giving thanks at least a few minutes.

6. The Obligation and need to receive communion frequently

   To receive Communion is not really necessary for salvation; if a newly baptized child dies, he is saved. But Jesus said, "Except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you" (John 6, 53). Corresponding to these words, the Church orders in the third commandment that all Christians must receive consciously the Eucharist at least once a year and for Easter. There is also an obligation to receive communion when we are in danger of death; in this case, the communion is received as a "Viaticum" which means preparation for the "journey" of eternal life.

    This is the minimum, and the precept must be well understood; hence the Church exhorts receive the Lord frequently, even daily. If someday we cannot receive communion, it is good to make a spiritual communion, expressing the desire to receive the Lord sacramentally.
