1. Through Baptism we begin to be part of the body of the Church

    Upon receiving the baptism we become incorporated into the Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ. That is why it is said that it is through baptism that we begin to be part of the Body of Christ. Upon receiving grace in the sacrament we join Christ, who is the Head of that body, and begin to be members that are alive. If we lose grace, we separate from the Head and become dead members. It is as if a hand, that is alive due to being attached to the body and the head, separates from the body; the hand would become corrupt, would die and would be useless. Therefore, we must always strive to live in grace.

2. Each member is united to the other members

    We know that in the parts of the human body are kept alive and communicate with each other when clean and good blood reaches all parts.

    The Mystical Body of Christ functions like this blood flow process, and the grace and the gifts that God gives us establish a communion of supernatural life of all members with the Head and amongst each other.

3. The union between the Saints in heaven, the souls in the purgatory and the faithful on earth

    The Church is formed not only by those who by baptism belong to it and that are on earth (the militant Church), but also the Saints in heaven (the triumphant Church) and those who are purifying their souls in the purgatory before entering heaven (the purgative Church). The three states of the Church are united because the only Head is Christ and the life that animates all is grace.

4. The communication of goods in the Church

    The life of the Body of Christ is grace, with everything that involves the supernatural life that members receive from the Head, thus establishing a close relationship between the members and the Head as well as amongst each other. Christ instills his gifts - the sense of faith and the impulse of charity - and faithful worship and praise. The blessed ones in heaven help us as well as those who are in the purgatory, while we invoke the Saints. The faithful on earth help each other out and help the souls in the purgatory, which in turn intercede for us before God.

    Therefore, it is like a blood transfusion occurs in the Church. The grace of Christ, the merits of the Holy Virgin and the Saints help us in life, like a blood transfusion helps keep life in the body. Thus, our prayers and good works are like good blood we give to others: to our parents, siblings, friends, other people as well as the souls in the purgatory. Also, the good works of the other members of the Church help us and do good to our souls.

5. How to live the communion of saints

    The communion of Saints is a reality that is so rich and comforting, and so important to the life and holiness of the Church, that we should not lose the opportunity to live it, thus striving to be better and helping others. The best way to live the communion of Saints is to receive the sacraments, since due to the grace that they transmit to us, we unite to God, his Holy grace by par excellence, more and more. Another way is to invoke the Virgin Mary and the Saints, because they give us the grace from God.

    We can help the purgative Church by offering the Mass, and by works and prayers for the souls in the purgatory that want to enjoy God in heaven as soon as possible. Similarly we can also help the militant Church - the Christians who are still combating on earth - by offering works during the day so that God can help them.
