18. Jesus Christ founded the Church |
Introduction
The Second Vatican Council says: “Christ is the Light of nations..., the Holy Spirit eagerly desires, by proclaiming the Gospel to every creature, is to bring the light of Christ to all men.” (cfr. Lumen gentium, 1). It is clear, then, that the Church entirely depends on Christ, as moonlight depends on the Sun’s influence.
Saint Augustin wrote that the Church is Christ among us: his hands still heals (the sacraments of the Church), his mouth still speaks (Christian doctrine preached by the Church). The Church continues Christ’s mission, and this is why He founded it.
When we profess our faith in the Creed, we say: “I believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.” It is the mother who take care of us with the sacraments and Jesus’ doctrine, guiding us to Heaven.
