14. The passion and death of Jesus |
Among the great mysteries of the love of Jesus Christ that we know by the Gospels, the most remarkable is his passion, his death and his resurrection. The evangelists are telling us the betrayal of Judas, the unfair trial before the court, the flagellation, the coronation with thorns and the death sentence. With the Cross on his back, he goes to Calvary where is stripped off his clothes, nailed to the cross and placed between two thieves. After three hours of great pain and agony, Jesus Christ dies. He is taken down from the cross and is given to his Mother and finally placed in the tomb.
Why did Jesus die? To save us, that is, to obtain the forgiveness of our sins and restore us the grace and friendship with God, expressing his love and showing the malice of sin.
