2. God goes to meet: the revelation


  Introduction

Saint Augustine is one of the most remarkable saints that the church had and one of the wiser men of Christianity. After a life away from God, he baptized, becoming bishop of Hippo in North Africa. He wrote much and has a particularly suggestive book: The Confessions, where he accounts his conversion and proclaims the longing or desire of God inscribed in the heart of the creature:    

“Great are You, O Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is your power, and of your wisdom there is no end. And man, being a part of your creation, desires to praise you. You move us to delight in praising you; for you have formed us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find rest in you.”

1. The desire of God in the heart

    The desire of God is inscribed in the heart of men that have been created by God and for God. He has not ceased to attract men to him, Only in God, they find the peace, the truth and the joy that they continue to look for.

   Men are religious human beings. As Saint Paul said in Athens: "in God we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).

2. Oblivion or denial of God

    Man can forget God, and even reject him or deny his existence. What are the reasons? The ignorance, the rebelliousness against the evil that suffer or we see, the endeavors of the world and wealth, the bad example of some who call themselves Christians, antireligion ideas, and the attitude of the sinner that hides from God and flees from his call due to the fear.

   None of these pretexts justifies the oblivion or the denial of God.

3. It is possible to know the existence of God by the natural reason

    Man can know the existence of God by two paths: the natural and the supernatural. By the natural way we come to God through the nature or creation. We see the sun, the Moon, the stars and we wonder who has done that? Who has ordered all the celestial bodies to follow their orbits perfectly? Only a creator God can do this.his.

   The second way to know the existence of God is the revelation. God has told us much knowledge to which we can reach neither with our intelligence, nor with science. First, he made known to the first parents: Adam and Eve. After the fall by the original sin, he does not abandon them but he promised them the salvation and offered his alliance. Then, with Abraham, he chose the people of Israel. Finally, God revealed himself fully by sending his own Son, Jesus Christ.

5. Jesus Christ, Word of the Father    

Jesus Christ is the Son of God made man. He is the single, perfect and definitive word of God the Father. Jesus Christ has already said everything that God wanted to tell us about the men, so that there will be no other Revelation after Christ.    

6. The sources of Revelation: Sacred Scripture and Tradition    

The Revelation of God is found in Sacred Scripture and the divine Tradition. The Sacred Scripture is the Word of God transmitted in writing, and consists of the inspired books by God that form the Bible: 45 of the Old Testament (before the coming of Jesus Christ to the earth) and 27 of the New Testament. The tradition is the divine revelation entrusted by Christ and the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and transmitted to the Church.    

7. The Church, guardian and interpreter of the deposit of faith    

Christ entrusted to his Church the revelation of God contained in the sacred Scripture and the Tradition. We call deposit of faith to that treasure. Christ has entrusted it to the Church to guards, interprets, professes and preaches it to everyone. This is the Christian doctrine that the Church never tires of teaching to men and women of all ages and all eras.    

8. Knowing the Bible    

The Church has great veneration by the Sacred Scripture, highlighting the four gospels that are in a truly privileged place, because its center is Jesus Christ. In the Mass, after reading the Gospel, the priest kisses it as a sign of veneration and respect. It is logical that Christians know the Sacred Scriptures, especially the Gospels, and devote the time to read and meditate on it. Saint Jerome says: "the ignorance of Scripture is the ignorance of Christ".
