15. Pantheism


 

  1. A testimony on pantheism

    The writer Maunoury, in his work “Autumn soirees” gives a description of pantheism (all is God):

    “For this ridiculous system, you are god and I am god. A he-goat and a ruminant bull are our divine brothers. But, what am I saying? A collard greens, a turnip, an onion, are gods just like us. The fungus you pick up in the morning is a god that sprouted during the night. When a fox catches a hen, is a god capturing another god. When a wolf devours a lamb, is a god devouring himself. The thistle and the donkey eating it are the same god. If I cut the throat of a man, carry out a divine action… You see how reasonable is this really all, and above all, how moral it is. With this system there will not be any crime. Robbery, murder, parricide, are whims of a god… Can you imagine nothing more preposterous?... It seems like a dream to see men declaring to be philosophers and teaching such stupidities!

  2. The notion of pantheism

Pantheism is a thought system that attempts to explain the world without God. Pantheism means that everything is God. God would be the whole of the beings in the universe. This system does not admit a personal God different from the world.    

Its main dogma consists of admitting only one substance, from which visible beings are merely changes or developments.    

It is the nature-God, the strength-God, the all-God. The identity of God is the universe.

 • Pantheism attempts to explain the world, without God

 • Pantheism admits a personal being different from the world

  3. Contradictions of pantheism

   a) Starting from material things which are finite, limited and imperfect, it seeks to demonstrate that they are an infinite perfect and necessary God. A being cannot be at the same time finite and infinite, because there would be a contradiction. There cannot be two things at the same time.

  b) Pantheism admits effects without a cause. Because if God is not a personal being, different from the world, there are no necessary beings, due to the fact that the necessary Being is only one, and so where is the cause why the universe has been produced?


   c) All of this goes against personal inner sense. I feel, without any doubt, that I am me and not other one. For pantheists, everybody would be the same person.


   d) It contradicts the statements or reason, which finds in God and in the world contradictory attributes.


   e) If every man is God, there would be no freedom or personal responsibility, opening the doors to vices and the destruction of virtue. Pantheism destroy every idea about a legislator, a law, a conscience, a duty, a punishment and a reward.
