8. The existence of moral law



  1. The intimate feeling

All men have the private feeling of the existence of God. In the face of misfortunes and problems let out a cry: my God! It is the cry of nature. Lacordaire said:    

- God is the most popular of all beings. The poor person calls him, the couple pleads him, the wicked is afraid of him, the honest man blesses him. There is no place, time, opportunity, or feeling, in which God does not appear and be called… anger believe not to be reached its highest expression until this lovely Name is cursed, and blasphemy is an homage of a faith revealed when it forgets itself.    

No blasphemy is given against something which does not exist. Both the anger of the wicked and the belief of the good men prove the existence of God.

  2. The voice of consciousness

Our conscience tells us four things:    

1. That there is essential difference between good and evil   

2. That we must do good and avoid evil

3. That every good action deserves a prize and a bad one a punishment

4. That conscience makes happy and approves itself when does good and gets sad and condemns itself when does evil. We have in ourselves the moral law naturally written in our conscience.

Where that law comes from? It can only come from a legislator, in the same way as there is no effect without a cause. This moral law is immutable in its principles, independent from our will and compulsory to everybody. Its author can only be a being superior to men, i.e., God.

  3. Moral law

    There is an objective, universal and immutable moral law ordering to do good, banning evil and ruling in everyone conscience. We feel happy when we obey this moral law and feel remorse if we reject it.

    This law can only come from God, due to the fact that there is no law without legislator. God is the supreme legislator ordering men the duty of doing good and avoiding evil; he is the witness of our acts, the judge awarding and punishing by means of conscientious happiness or anguish.
