2. Elements of the emotions

Inside our emotions, we can distinguish: knowledge, tendency, affective state and organic impact.

First example: when confronting a threatening situation, we know that a danger is scaring us. Then, we experienced an inclination to avoid that danger, and we feel fear or annoyance. Last, we suffer an organic reaction, as tremors, sweating and screaming.

Second example: when we experienced a misfortune, we feel the knowldege of what have happened, the desire of doing nothing, an emotional state of displeasure, disgust and despair, and the organic consequences, as crying and paleness of face.

3. Theories about the emotions

There are two theories to explain emotions: the first is based on organic results as the main force of emotional states. The second defends the emotional state result of knowledge as the most important, and organic results as a consequence of the first cause.

The first theory was developed by North American psychologist W. James, who maintains that “we are sad because we cry”, while other experts defend that “we cry because we are sad”, and we are sad because we know something unfortunate or negative.
